Ocufen Opthalmic Solution is an ophthalmic eye preparation, which is used just before eye surgery that helps to keep the pupil open during surgery. It is also used for relieving the eye inflammation, pain and discomfort in eye. Patients who are already using steroid eye drops should not use this drug.

Ocufen Opthalmic Solution contains Generic Flurbiprofen, which belongs to NSAIDs class of the drug. It works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase (COX) and reduces the actions of prostaglandins. Due to the reduction in prostaglandin, inflammation of eye gets reduced along with swelling in eye.

Contraindications of Ocufen Flurbiprofen Opthalmic Solution

Ocufen is contraindicated in some conditions, so avoid the use of this drug in these conditions:

  • Individuals who have any type of blood clotting disorders should not use this drug.
  • If someone has, a recent history of Herpes virus infections then avoids the use of this drug.
  • If you have, a recent history of cardiac disorders should avoid the use of this drug.
  • In case of any eye infection, the drug should not be used.

Drug Interactions With Ocufen Flurbiprofen Opthalmic Solution

Some drugs interact with the use of this drug, so avoid them along with the use of Ocufen.

  • Blood thinner drugs like: Dabigatran, Enoxaparin and Warfarin
  • Anti-platelet drugs such as: Clopidogrel
  • NSAIDs such as: Ibuprofen
  • Corticosteroids such as: Prednisone

Storage conditions: Store this drug at room temperature i.e. below 300C. Keep this bottle away from the moisture and direct heat. The cap of container should be tightly closed, so that any type of humidity and moisture cannot reach into it.

Doses of Ocufen Flurbiprofen Opthalmic Solution

Prescribed dose of Ocufen that should be used: This drug is available only for single use and it contains enough liquid to put one drop into each eye that needs treating. The vial should be disposed of immediately after use and do not save any remaining liquid. Before using this drug wash your hands properly and squeeze it to release one drop of the drug. Drop the drug just before 30 minutes of the eye surgery and wait for 1 minute. Do not use this drug for long time because can cause serious side effects.

Several types of side affects you may feel after the instillation of this eye drug such as dizziness, decreased vision, itching in eyes, burning of the eyes, allergic reaction and swelling in eyes.

Precautions Should Be Taken While Using Ocufen

  • Avoid the use of this eye drop if you are allergic to generic Ocufen.
  • Individuals who have any type of eye infections, eye rashes or any other type of eye infection then avoid the use of this drug.
  • Avoid driving after the instillation of this drug as it produces blurred vision for some time.
  • Pregnant females and breast feeding mothers should avoid the use of this drug as it can cause harm to your baby.
  • Patients who are suffering from any type of eye disorders like cornea and dry eye syndrome should avoid the use of this drug.
  • Do not use it along with the use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen and Celecoxib.
