Timoptic ophthalmic solution is a brand name of Timolol Eye Drops, an active ingredient that helps to reduce intraocular pressure inside the eye. It is classified under the group of medication called beta-blocker drug. It is used to treat open angle glaucoma and other disorder caused due to high-pressure in the eye. Timolol is an FDA approved drug in 1978.

Mechanism of Action

Timolol Eye Drops is classified under beta-adrenergic blocking agent that helps to block the action sympathetic nervous system such as heart. In addition to that, it also helps to reduction pressure within the eye. This effect will result in the reduction in the production of aqueous humour within the eye. Finally, the reduction of intraocular pressure reduces will reduce the risk of optical nerve damage and also loss of vision in patients with glaucoma.

Dosage of Timolol Eye Drops

Always use Timalol as directed by your physician. The usual dose of Timolol is one drop of this eye drops into affected eye two times a day, approximately 12 hours apart. Consult to your doctor in order to increase or decrease the dose of this medication.

If you are using Timolol with the combination of other drug, then there should be a gap of almost 5 to 15 minutes before applying the second eye drop.

Before applying this drop, properly wash your hands and then tilt you head and pull the lower lid down with the help of index finger to form a pouch. The tip of the container should not touch the eyelid in order to avoid contamination. The bottle should be squeezed in order to allow the number of drops into the eye. Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes after applying. Excess of drops should be removed with the help of clean tissue paper.

In case of miss dose, apply the drop as soon as you remember. However, if it's time for your next dose to take, then skip the previous dose and continue with your regular routine.

Contraindication of Timolol Eye Drops

Do not apply Timolol eye drop if you are:

  • allergic to Timolol or any of its ingredient
  • if having the history of respiratory problem such as severe chronic bronchitis and asthma
  • If you have any kind of heart disorder or coronary heart disease
  • poor blood circulation disorder
  • over activity of the thyroid gland

Drug Interaction with Timolol Eye Drops

Timalol with the combination in other drugs can cause severe side effects. Consult your doctor before taking Timolol with the following drugs. Medications such as digoxin, verapamil, diltiazem, catecholamine-depleting drugs, clonidine, quinidine, some of the beta-blockers and antidepressants drugs should be avoided while taking Timolol.

Storage Condition of Timolol Eye Drops

Store Timolol eye drop at room temperature above 25°C. Keep this medication away from excess heat and moisture. Discard the bottle within 28 days of opening, even if the solution is remaining.

Side Effects of Timolol Eye Drops

Intake of Timolol can cause some mild side effects such as difficulty of breathing, swelling of lips, mouth and tongue, low blood level, depression, itchiness, hives, rashes, allergic reaction, difficulty sleeping, stinging, tearing, redness, slow heart rate, chest pain, oedema, cold hands and feet, muscles weakness and tiredness.

Precaution While Taking Timolol Eye Drops

Consult to your physician before using Timolol if you are pregnant or want to become pregnant, breast feeding women as it can get into the milk and harm unborn baby. Do not carry out heavy machine work until you are sure, to what extent Timolol can affect you.
